The Princess didn’t need more mattresses —
she needed thoughtful design!
„Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse“ (The Princess and
the Pea) is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen
about a young woman who claims to be a princess. To
test her royal authenticity, she is made to sleep on
a bed piled high with mattresses, beneath which a
single pea is placed. Despite the luxurious setup,
she feels discomfort from the pea and cannot sleep,
proving her sensitivity and thus her royal status.
The story highlights themes of sensitivity, authenticity,
and perception.
The princess’s sensitivity to the tiny pea highlights
the importance of comfort and the quality of
the sleeping environment. In a modern, sustainable
context, it symbolizes how thoughtful choices in
building and decorating a home can lead to both personal
comfort and environmental benefits.
Did you know? The so-called Sustainable Development
Goal 7 is called ‘Good Health and Well-being“. Renovating
with natural, non-toxic materials like we
tried to do here, leads to improvement of air quality
and supports mental and physical well-being. A
healthy house ensures that everyone sleeps soundly
and wakes up refreshed — whether or not there’s a
pea under the mattress!
So, let’s stay in places that prioritize comfort,
sustainability, and minimal impact. Sleep better for
a greener future.
